Areopoli is the heart of the Mani — a town of stern stone towers, narrow cobblestone streets, and a fierce independence that has defined this peninsula for centuries. Named after Ares, the god of war, it was here that the Greek War of Independence was declared in 1821. Today it is the gateway to the Diros Caves, Deep Mani, and some of the most dramatic landscape in Greece.
The Diros Caves are just 10 km south of Areopoli, a 10-minute drive. The cave tour takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes by boat. We recommend arriving early in the morning during summer to avoid queues, as the caves are one of the most popular attractions in the region.
Excellent. Areopoli sits at the crossroads of the outer and inner Mani, making it ideal for day trips in all directions. Stoupa and Kardamili are 30 minutes north, Gerolimenas is 25 minutes south, and Gythio is 20 minutes east. The town itself has good restaurants, atmospheric guesthouses, and a strong sense of place.
Cape Tainaron (Cape Matapan), the southernmost point of mainland Greece, is approximately 50 km south of Areopoli. The road passes through haunting tower villages like Vatheia before ending at a car park, from which a 20-minute walk brings you to the ancient lighthouse.
